What We Know So Far About the 2019 Mazda MX-5 MiataWe know that the Mazda MX-5 Miata will get a number of changes for the 2019 model year, and at this point, we know what most of them will be. A lot of information on the new model has been released recently, and this information is very exciting.  Keep reading to find out what we know so far.

Engine Power

While the car will still have the same Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter inline-four engine as last year, the 2019 Miata gains 26 horsepower for a total of 181 horsepower and 3 additional pound-feet of torque for a total of 151 pound-feet of torque. The result is a higher redline of 7,500 rpm, as opposed to the previous 6,800. The change in rpms is critical since full horsepower doesn’t come on board until 7,000 rpm. The peak torque is at 4,000, lower than the previous 4,600. There have been a number of mechanical changes to the engine to allow these greater revs, and we expect the end result to be a nice improvement in the car’s power.

More Convenience

For the first time, the Miata will have a telescoping steering wheel with a range of nearly 1.2 inches, giving drivers some flexibility in seating positions. The upper steering column is made of aluminum rather than steel, so this change provides added comfort without adding increased weight. Additionally, Mazda has said that the doors will be easier to open and close, and the cup holders and seat controls have been redesigned to improve comfort and ease of use as well.

New Colors

The 2019 Mazda Miata gets new colors both inside and out. New external options include a brown canvas top and black metallic 17-inch wheels. There are also three new color options for the interior leather inside the RF Grand Touring trim.

Safety

There have been a number of improvements and additions to the safety features of the 2019 Miata, such as a federally mandated rearview camera. It will also include available features such as traffic sign recognition and smart city brake support.

Price

Mazda recently released the prices for the various Miata trims, including the RF hardtop line, and MSRPs seem to have increased only about $400 to $600 on average for comparable trims. Considering the additional power, comfort, and safety features that are packed into the newest model year, this seems like a small price to pay.

Mazda has been very focused on its concept of innovating in order to preserve, and the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata holds true to that concept. It gains only 7 pounds of weight from previous models, despite the numerous advances, and this is possible thanks to some impressive innovation with design and materials across the board.

The cars will be available in the U.S. in the fall.  No matter whether you’re a die-hard Miata fan or you’re just considering buying your first one, you’re going to want to test drive this model. We expect that once you’ve tried it, you won’t want to let it go.
